Sounds of the City

“It was on a late Monday night and the streets of Paris were very quiet… the sounds from that night in the cab, including the taxi headlights blinking, an ambulance, 2 really great French songs which I heard for the first time” and a conversation between the taxi driver and her friend.

It’s interesting how without visuals, relying purely on a mixture of sounds, I was able to make out a vague but richly coloured scene of the foreign city that is perhaps more intimate than looking at images. The power of sound.

Atlas Eclipticalis

by John Cage. It’s a really romantic idea.. mapping stars as musical notes, brightness of stars is translated into the size of the notes, however it may sound, the score looks beautiful, no less the concept. While I’m exploring ways of representing sound through sight and touch, he translated visuals into audio. Pretty inspiring. Anyway, I’m also doing a mapping project for pub design on places to star gaze in singapore currently so this is real food for thought. nice.

Poly Notions

Poly Notions by Daniel Newman

His work ‘combine multiple photographic layers of urban imagery forming resonant compositions much like the musical timbres of a jazz quartet.’ Photography and layering translates texture; repetition of light and shadow, lines and forms create visual rhythm that is akin to music.
